Dr. Tom Horvath
Dr. Tom Horvath, PhD, ABPP, is a clinical psychologist specializing in high risk behavior. He works with teens and young adults and their families to reduce or eliminate the risks associated with addictive and sexual behavior. He was raised in Youngstown, Ohio. He earned a BA from St. John's College, Annapolis, Maryland, and a PhD from the California School of Professional Psychology at San Diego. He is President (since 1985) of Practical Recovery Services, La Jolla, CA, which offers an alternative to traditional 12-step, disease model treatment ( www.practicalrecovery.com). He is President (since1995) of SMART Recovery, an international, non-profit network of cognitive-behavioral self-help groups for addictive behavior ( www.smartrecovery.org). He was President (1999-2000) of the American Psychological Association's ( www.apa.org) Division on Addictions, the world's largest organization of addictive behavior psychologists. He was President (1990-91) of the San Diego Psychological Association. He is author of Sex, Drugs, Gambling & Chocolate: A Workbook for Overcoming Addictions, 2nd ed. (Impact, 2003).
